From Backboards to Boardrooms

Meet Steve Dupee. Senior Vice President of Client Management here at GMR. Fifteen year veteran of the sports marketing industry. 6'3" Virgo who loves travel, fine wine, and live music.

And, we’re proud to announce, one of Sports Business Journal’s Forty Under 40 for 2013.

Sports Work, Sports Play

Steve grew up incredibly involved in sports, both watching (Go Packers!) and playing (basketball, baseball, golf, skiing, volleyball). At UW-Eau Claire he played shooting guard for the Blugolds.

But as a journalism major, he didn't expect sports to factor into his professional life.

“A lot of kids come out of college to go into sports marketing simply because they love sports so much, and it’s not as simple as that,” Steve said. “You can love sports – but that doesn’t mean you’re going to be good at sports business.”

So Steve went down his journalism path, taking an internship in newspaper ad sales. Then through networking at the paper, one door opened, and another. In each role, he stepped up. And he became very good at sports business, moving from the Chippewa Valley Sports Commission to the National Sports Forum to GMR Marketing.

Team Player

Steve has been with GMR for just over a decade now, and in that time he’s been instrumental in growing our dedicated sports marketing practice. As SVP Client Management, he works side by side with many of our leading sports clients, including Comcast, Northwestern Mutual, and Hershey’s, driving sponsorship strategy and overseeing incredible client successes.

It’s not just clients he supports. He serves as Chairman of the Busta Benefit for Waisman Center and leads a major GMR fundraiser – Bags for Busta – each year. A dedicated husband and father of three, Steve spends much of his time outside of work coaching his kids’ teams and attending their events.

And while sports passion doesn’t guarantee success in sports business, he does credit his time on the court and field for shaping who he is today.

“For me, being involved in sports really laid the groundwork for qualities like leadership, work ethic, prioritization, communication. As an athlete, these are skills that I grew up with, and they’re intangibles that I find very valuable in a business setting,” said Steve.

So do we. We couldn’t be prouder of Steve Dupee for being named a 2013 SBJ Forty Under 40 honoree.

Steve joins four past “Forty Under 40” winners in the GMR family: Tyson Webber (2012), Adam Lippard (2011), Cameron Wagner (2010), and Greg Busch (2008).
